Jorge Retamoza
Musical Bio

 
     Argentine musician and composer who has taken jazz and tango elements together with academicals procedures, carries out an innovative work that recognizes its genealogy in the work of Astor Piazzola.
His personal hallmark can be found in his records with his quintet Jorge Retamoza & Tango XXX such as Impresionismo Porteño (endorsement by Buenos Aries Culture Found), Balvanera, Policial Argentino, Violentango.

   As argentine media expresses: `...elements from tango and jazz mix creating an unprecedented, and sometimes surprising, sonority...´

   He regularly performs in Argentina in tango and jazz festivals, concerts halls, cultural centers and TV shows.

   He has also developed an activity as a composer in an area that could be called “academic”, “En blanco y negro Buenos Aires”, for bandoneón and six percussionists, “Concierto para saxo tenor, bandoneón y orquesta”, works for piano and viola: “Encuentro en Buenos Aires”, works for piano-cello-clarinet, “Buenos Aires esmeralda”, all of them already premiered. Arrangements for strings quintet, saxophone quartet, over original songs and versions of other Argentinean composer’ works.
These Works are performed and recorded by solists and groups from Argentina and other countries (Cuerdas de Madrid, Donna Clark – USA –, Percusionistas de Buenos Aires, Undersax, Buenos Aries Clásico, etc.)

   He has composed music for TV and radio programs, expositions in art galleries and museums, as well as the music for Memoria y Balance, which won the first prize in the film contest organized by the Buenos Aires International Book Fair in 1997.

   In 1998 he obtained by contest the Baritone Saxophone chair for the Symphony Orchestra of Buenos Aires.

   He has also performed in presentations, recordings and tours with the main popular artist from Argentina, such as Memphis, César Pueyrredón, Los Tarantos, Sandro, and with figures of international stature as Isabel Pantoja y Celia Cruz.

   He has joined numerous jazz bands, including small and big bands, playing with the main musicians of this style in Argentina. He has also recorded soundtracks, jingles and music hall orchestras.

From an early age, he starts studding piano with professors Avelina Alboni and Celia de Carlo. Some years later, he begins self teaching saxophone, and alter a while he starts with Bernardo Baraj.

   Subsequently he studied saxophone and chamber music classical techniques with Alejandro González. He achieved the scholarship from the “IV Seminario de Jazz de Las Leñas”, with Jorge Cutello as instructor. He has also taken part in magister classes given by Miguel Villafruela (classic), Jim Snidero y Bob Mintzer (jazz).

   He studied harmony and counterpoint with Pedro Aguilar. And, he also studied counterpoint, harmony and composition with Claudio Alsuyet

Jorge Retamoza &Tango XXX


Argentinean contemporary quintet that is based on tango and take gestures from jazz and chamber music. The result is a music that is called “post-Piazzolla” style or “new tango” as a pursuance of Astor’s work

Jorge Retamoza & Tango XXX had recorded four cds, Tango XXX, Violentango, Policial Argentino and Balvanera, and is working on a new album that will be ready for March 2006.

This new record has de endorsement by the Culture Found of Buenos Aires government.
The repertoire of the quintet is mostly originals by his conductor, some arrangements of Piazzolla’s tunes and a few tango standards that the group uses as improvisation vehicles.
